Antilia Update, Toi Engine to Become Open Source

Can we expect in-side joke quests...?

As far as in-jokes, there may be a few references here and there that those who've explored the Isle of Kasau might appreciate, but I certainly wouldn't want to rely too heavily on those. I'm afraid that would only alienate the majority of the future audience.

Comedy is a good topic to bring up with the dev team sometime. As said before, I'm not a fan of using pop-culture references in place of original comedy (I consider it a rather lazy). I much prefer the idea of creating original comedy from the perspective of the characters in the world, but I imagine successfully delivering that kind of comedy will be difficult.

It's good to hear some kind of update, even if it isn't too much. It gives the vibe of the game not being dead, and shows you're still working on making a quality product. Toi going open source is making me feel like I ought to start learning coding myself...

I totally agree with this. Having jokes from pop-culture not only doesn't feel right in the game world, it's just plain unimaginative. I would feel better having comedy that makes sense in context of the game world, and not just reminding us of some silly picture that is all over the internet that got old months or weeks after it first went viral.

Was more referring to reference of things that have been made in the commute these past few years, not pop-culture.

I love your in-depth way of updating. other games' site updates go along the lines of "we're doing lots of stuff. we got this. just wait." or say nothing at all. I like this.

I will indeed lurk. this is totally worth waiting for ^.^

Glad to see an update, will be happy with it as a single player game as I really didn't need to get into another MMO. I currently play SWToR, STO, Neverwinter, Champions, LOTRO and one or 2 others, though I only sub to SWToR. The only single player RPGs I realm play right now are Skyrim and occasionally Dragon Age or Mass Effect games. Antilla will likely be my #1 game once out as I like the idea of a anthro "furry" world over Skyrim as I only play as an argonian or more rarely a khajiit. Look forward to seeing this continue to progress.

I don't read too well so please don't burn me at the stake if i missed something in the update lol. I thought that the DX9 visual quality in this game was pretty good. why bother with the DX11 option if there is not even a working beta. If i'm not mistaken this game is pushing the 10 year mark, and we have had some good alpha/beta tests and runs. I don't like saying this but can we cut off the things that are more add-on to the game, like the dx11 api change. I just don't see what that does for the game. And yes it maybe a easy thing to cross over to, but that pushes the project launch further then what is already is.

I'm not trying to be or sound mean in anyway, I just want to play this as much as the next person.

Thank you for what updates you can give developers.

After spending a week trying to sort out how to build and integrate a new multi-threaded DX11 rendering solution I came to the same conclusion and put the DX11 rendering solution on indefinite hold. In theory it was simple, but in practice it turned out to be a lot more complicated than I expected it to be. For Toi to be a viable open-source engine it may be a requirement, but for Antilia I decided it wouldn't improve performance nearly as much as simpler less time consuming optimizations would.

In this case, I think I allowed my engineering head to get a little too excited about a new challenging engineering project and had to reign it back in a bit and reassess the core project goals. Making Toi open-source is certainly one of my goals, but I think I need to keep that secondary to Antilia itself. There are plenty of game engines out there, but not many games like Antilia in the works.

For now I've put engine improvements on pause and I've resumed work on content creation tools that will allow the other dev team members to once again be productive on Antilia. I expect the next blog post to focus on their unveiling and time permitting, how we're putting them to use.
